The island is within easy reach of Cairns in North Queensland, we operate the Fitzroy Flyer 3 times a day.
Fitzroy Island enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons that attract visitors year-round.
The Dry Season from April to November offers warm days and cooler nights with low humidity and temperatures ranging from 19-30°C. Nature comes alive from December to March in the Green Season with hotter days and nights, restorative tropical showers and temperatures between 22-32°C.
If your number of guests exceed the room capacity, try booking multiple rooms to accommodate your group. Book online here.
While sunny skies are a regular occurrence, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve packed appropriately for your time on the island, so we’ve put together a list of the essentials to pack for your holiday to Fitzroy Island. Check it out here.
“Fitzroy Flyer” departs Cairns and Fitzroy Island at the following times:
Please note that we do not operate the midday services during the months of February and March. All Day trippers and Resort Guests are required to check in directly at the Fitzroy Flyer, located on Berth 20 at the Marlin Marina Wharf. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure. You will be required to show the QR code in your confirmation prior to boarding. Advanced reservations are required, and walk-ins will not be accepted.
Please make your way directly to the Fitzroy Flyer to check-in. Guests will be required to show the QR code in their confirmation prior to boarding the ferry. The Fitzroy Flyer is located at Berth 20 on the Marlin Marina Wharf. To ensure a seamless process, we recommend that guests save their transfer confirmations, as phone signals may be disrupted on the island. A map is linked below to help you find the location of the ferry. Please arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to departure from Cairns. When leaving Fitzroy Island, we request that you make your way to the jetty 15 minutes prior to departure. Due to increased Workplace Health & Safety requirements, we can no longer accept heavy luggage (20kg or greater), Eskys, cooler boxes, beach trolleys, Stand Up Paddleboards or Sea Kayaks.
We have limited space in the Booking Centre to store your luggage if you arrive early. We are happy to store your luggage until it’s time to board. We recommend coming back to the office at least 30 minutes prior to departure. Unfortunately, we cannot transfer your luggage from the Booking Centre to the vessel so please pack accordingly. IF you’re taking advantage of an earlier transfer – 8am or 11am – you can store your luggage in our luggage room on island until your room is ready; check-in is from 3pm. The luggage storage room is available to all resort guests, so we recommend keeping any valuables with you until you check-in, or making use of the lockers in the storage room. Fees apply.
On your day of departure, we have limited room in the Booking Centre to store your luggage until 3pm. Please see the team in the Booking Centre to see whether we have space available or not as we do not have a dedicated area for departure bags.
All guests can book return transfers on the “Fitzroy Flyer” through our website.
Resort Guests can book online with the code FITZGUEST, we currently offer a 40% discount if you are staying in the Resort Rooms, Butterfly Bungalows or Beach Cabins. This offer excludes the 8am & 5pm transfers and is only valid on the Fitzroy Flyer. Further T&C’s apply.
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 10am.
Pool opening hours are from 7 am to 9 pm. Guests are welcome to use the pool before check-in & after check-out, however pool towels are only available in the rooms once your room is ready. In support of an eco-friendly environment, Fitzroy Island Resort highly recommends a conservative approach with your pool towels. Using towels more than once helps save countless litres of water, detergent and energy consumption. Guests are encouraged to use their own towels before check-in & after check-out.
We sometimes offer packages with included transfers in the room rate; however, these clearly list whether transfers are included or not and most rates online are room only and will NOT include your transfers. Please check your booking confirmation for more details.
If your package includes return “Fitzroy Flyer” transfers, this will be scheduled for 1:30pm departing Cairns & 9:30am departing the island. For any amendments to these times, a fee of $30 per ticket applies.
If you have booked via Agoda, Expedia, Booking.Com etc. these will NOT include transfers.
Cairns Airport is about a 15-minute taxi ride to the CBD but will depend on traffic and time of day. Please allow enough time to get from the Airport to the Marlin Marina Wharf to check-in for your scheduled vessel departure as the “Fitzroy Flyer” service will not be able to wait. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your vessel departure time.
Our website will always have our best available rates. By entering your dates and number of people travelling, you will be able to see our most up to date availability and pricing. Once you’ve completed your booking online, you’ll receive your instant confirmation and know your holiday is booked.
We are a national park which means pets are NOT ALLOWED on Fitzroy Island.
The purpose of national parks is to provide a much-needed refuge for native plants and animals. While dogs and other pets may be a valued part of a family, they’re a real threat to our native animals. This is why dogs, cats, and all other domestic pets—including caged birds—aren’t allowed. On-the-spot fines apply if you are found to have pets with you in a national park.
Please view our resort specials and packages here.
Our current cancellation policy can always be found online here.

Our locals discounts are gradual throughout the year and are not always on offer. These bookings can only be made online; you can check for updates on any local specials here.
The Reef Fleet Terminal/Cairns Marlin Wharf is located at 1 Spence Street, Cairns 4870, which is just next to the Shangri-La Hotel at the Pier Marketplace. If you are staying overnight at the Resort and have a vehicle that requires overnight secure parking, we would recommend either parking undercover at the Pier or at the nearby Casino or Hilton, please see supplier directly for prices. If travelling to Fitzroy Island as a “day guest”, Council parking is available outside the Pier, or you can park undercover at the Casino or the Pier. There is also all-day parking for at the outdoor carparks near Trinity Wharf on Wharf Street, about two blocks away.
Please see supplier directly for prices. The Cairns Regional Council has a dedicated parking page, click here. The council also provide a map showing the location of the carparks, click here.
There are two types of ‘stingers’ in the area: the Irukandji Jellyfish and the Box Jellyfish. They might be present year-round, but there is a higher risk between October and May where jellyfish can be found around the mainland, islands and occasionally the reef.
By taking some simple precautions to minimise risk you can safely and comfortably swim around Fitzroy Island. When snorkelling or swimming, please wear protective ‘stinger suits’. These suits are available to hire for a small cost. We have stinger/vinegar stations placed around the resort area. If you are stung, please pour vinegar liberally over the affected area and seek first-aid assistance urgently.
We request all guests do not use substances that may be harmful to the local environment e.g. particular sunscreens or insect repellents may be harmful to waterways and reefs.
Complimentary Wi-Fi internet access is available in the hotel common areas with hotspots located in the Reception Lobby, Pool Bar, and Foxy’s Bar. This is a shared satellite connection and may not be suitable for Zoom/video calls.
Fitzroy Island Resort offers all Guests and Visitors a variety of venues to enjoy a meal or snack, for this reason we request that day visitors do not bring their own food onto the Island. If you are staying overnight in the resort, cabins or bungalows, one soft cooler bag, roughly the size of a regular shopping bag, is permitted per passenger for food only and may be subject to inspection. Guests are strictly not allowed to bring their own alcohol for consumption. We offer a bottle shop service from Foxy’s bar and have a small general store for some basic goods, sunscreen ice-creams etc.
Food and beverages can be purchased at the Pool Bar, Foxy’s Bar, Zephyr Restaurant and the General Store. Opening times vary, click here for more information.
We do strongly recommend bookings for Zephyr Restaurant due to limited capacity. Our resort guests can pre-book via https://bit.ly/3HFJGQY. In the notes section, please use your accommodation booking reference. Unfortunately at this time, we cannot accept Day Tour guests for breakfast and as always, no reservations are needed for Foxy’s Bar.
There is certainly no shortage of activities available on Fitzroy Island. Our weekly timetables includes kids activities, snorkel tours, guided bushwalks, trivia at Foxy’s and more.

We highly recommend to book tours in advance here, or you book on the day via the hotel reception (hotel guests get priority bookings). Bookings are nonrefundable.
