How long does it take to get to Fitzroy Island?
Even though Fitzroy Island is a tropical island in the Coral Sea, you don’t have to travel too far to get there.
Fitzroy Island is around 29 km from the Australian mainland – with Cairns being the closest major town. The easiest way to get there is via the Fitzroy Flyer ferry, which leaves from the Cairns Marina a few times a day.
You can also opt to take your own boat over to the island too. There are mooring fees required however, they are pretty affordable.
Cairns is a large city in Far North Queensland and has an airport, so if you’re coming from another state or country, it’s pretty easy to make your way to Cairns.
What can you do on the island?
Fitzroy Island offers so many different activities and sights to see, with something interesting for people of all ages.
Whether you’re into a relaxing holiday vibe or you like a little bit of action and adventure, you’re going to be entertained.
Many of the most popular activities on the island are water-based and include:
- Stand up paddle boarding
- Swimming
- Snorkelling
- Glass bottomed boat rides
- Sea kayaking

Is it easy to get to the Great Barrier Reef?
Yes! As you may already know, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest reef system, and on Fitzroy Island we’re lucky enough to be situated in the very same waters that the Great Barrier Reef is in – the Coral Sea.
Only metres from the shores of the island, you can find coral gardens and marine creatures of this marvellous underwater world. So, you don’t have to travel too far to get a glimpse of the Reef.
The island is also a great launching pad for Great Barrier Reef tours, with trips to the outer reefs available.

Can I learn how to scuba dive?
You sure can.
We offer scuba lessons, courses and tours on the island that are run by accredited PADI instructors. No matter whether you’re a first-time scuba diver, you want to brush up on your skills or you’re looking for a challenge, there is an option for you.
We even have scuba lessons for children. The Bubblemaker program has been designed to give kids the chance to learn how to use scuba equipment and even explore the shallow waters around the island (under the supervision of the PADI instructor).
Can I meet a sea turtle?
If you’ve always wanted to see a sea turtle up close, Fitzroy Island is a great place to do just that.
The waters of the Reef happen to be home to 6 of the world’s 7 species of sea turtles.
You may have a chance of seeing them out in the wild if you’re snorkelling, or spending time out on the water.
But, when you’re on the island, you also have the opportunity to see the sea turtles without even getting wet – by visiting the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on the island.
Run by volunteers, the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is home to many injured and unwell sea turtles. Here, they are nursed back to health and released back into the wild (if that is appropriate).
The centre is home to some permanent turtle residents and during your time there you can meet some of these turtles, as well as learn about their experiences and how the centre helps them.
Definitely a worthwhile experience.
