Activities

Fitzroy Island is a large tropical island offering, in separate locations, five distinctly different types of accommodation, ranging from affordable 4.5 star Resort facilities, to Divers accommodation and change facilities, to a Camping Ground, and to Day Visitor facilities (including Foxy’s Bar and Café and a Retail Shop).

At Fitzroy Island, you can relax and escape, you can dive right in to adventure, or you can do a little of both. Accessible, affordable and friendly, the island’s safe, sheltered waters and pristine natural environment are here for all to explore and enjoy.

Snorkelling in the pristine waters of Fitzroy Island

Explore the Great Barrier Reef – Snorkelling, Diving and Swimming

Fitzroy Island is the perfect spot to visit the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, and it’s a great land based alternative to the Barrier Reef pontoon experience.

You can swim, snorkel and dive in safety off our iconic coral beaches, exploring this World Heritage Listed coral reef system at your own pace. Make friends with the sea life, including clown fish, turtles and even whales.

Have some fun on the water as well as in it, with activities including diving, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing or sailing. Dare to ride the fabulous AqaJets or just explore the coral fringe reef in the comfort of our Glass Bottom Boat or take a lazy day on our luxurious 16 metre sailing catamaran, Eye Spy. A sheltered passage from Cairns and secure moorings make Fitzroy Island an ideal destination for day trips on your own boat or yacht.

Exploring the walking trails at Fitzroy Island

Get Back to Nature – Walking and Exploring

At Fitzroy Island, it’s all about rainforest, beaches and high reaches, with just as much to explore on land as in the sea.

Explore the bush walking tracks throughout the island, like the Lighthouse and Summit walks, with views all the way to the Barrier Reef.  Trek to magic spots like Secret Garden and Nudey Beach, one of Far North Queensland’s most iconic beaches.

The Island was converted into a military base during World War II to protect Australia’s mainland from invasion.  Most of the walking trails were formed during this time, hence their access to some of the best vantage points in the region, although these days visitors are only on the lookout for the stunning views.

Discover Fitzroy Island’s peaks, valleys, rainforests, coral beaches, crystal clear springs, birds and wildlife; and make sure you don’t miss our sunrise and sunset views across to the untouched coastline of Far North Queensland.

Jumping into the beautiful warm water at Fitzroy Island

Escape and Unwind on the Beach

Picture yourself on a white sandy beach lined with coconut trees and sloping gently into the calm, clear Coral Sea; this is Fitzroy Island.

Step out straight in front of the Resort to Welcome Bay with all its life and activity, or take a walk to the iconic and stunning Nudey beach, which despite the name, is not what you think!

There is plenty to do around Fitzroy Island’s beaches whether your aim is to relax or get adventurous. This includes fishing, whale watching (between July & September) or just watching the stars by firelight at night.

The Fitzroy Island Dive and Activites centre

The Dive & Activites Centre

This area is the centre for all activities on the island (other than Entertainment). Refer to the location plan for ease of access. Our firendly and experienced staff will advise on Diving, Snorkelling, Water Based Equipment Hire, plus hire of the Aqua Jets.

Be sure to talk to our staff on how to experience an amazing day sailing between the reefs on our luxurious catamaran Eye Spy. Let the Eye Spy crew pamper you while you realise how beautiful the ocean is. This is without a doubt the best way to watch whales during migration season. The Eye Spy crew specialise in private functions as well.

Relaxation and Revival - Wellbeing for All

Fitzroy Island is friendly and fun by nature, but this place is still a sanctuary of calm and wellbeing when you want it to be.

You can’t help but slow down and relax in this peaceful, natural paradise, with fresh Australian produce at both the Resort Restaurant and Foxy's Bar and Café. We even grow most of our own vegetables, greens and herbs in our Resort Gardens.

So take the time to escape everyday life and revive your senses.

Aqajet

Fantastic, futuristic under water tow jets. They have to be experienced to be believed. The AqaJets allow snorkelling even if you are not a strong swimmer. They're really great fun too!! Talk to our staff and ask about the AqaJet. Let's help you discover how beautiful it is under the ocean and the great fun too.
