Blogger Review of Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is a strong contender for being one of Australia’s very best island destinations. Located under an hour’s ferry ride from Cairns, this pristine Great Barrier Reef inner island is an adventurer’s dream, offering everything from pristine, white-sand beaches, epic snorkelling and great bushwalking!

So, what’s it actually like to stay on Fitzroy Island? I had the same question and after spending a couple of nights in the Fitzroy Island Resort’s Island Suite, I want to share with you my opinion to help you make your mind up about booking.

My name is Olly, an adventure traveller and professional travel and landscape photographer who has been hooked on full-time travel for over 4 years now. I write inspiring travel guides on raw adventures including hiking, waterfalls, epic islands and mountain trekking. In this short article, I’m going to give you a rundown on exactly what it’s like to stay on Fitzroy Island at the beautiful Fitzroy Island Resort off Cairns.

About Fitzroy island

Fitzroy Island has its own National Park designation and is protected as Fitzroy Island National Park. Fitzroy Island is a part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks and even has its own National Parks designation, which ensures its nature and beauty is preserved for everybody to enjoy.

Fitzroy Island is one of the closest Great Barrier Reef islands near Cairns, and towers 370 metres above sea level. You’ll find a stretch of fringing reef around its coast, and of course, the beautiful Nudey Beach on its western tip.

Much of the island is untouched, with tourism infrastructure set up in Welcome Bay. This area is operated and maintained by the Fitzroy Island Resort, the only accommodation option on the island. There are so many epic and fun things to do here that you’ll want to spend at least a couple of days here.

Arriving at Fitzroy Island

Hopping off the ferry at Welcome Bay is like stepping straight into paradise. Crystal clear, Turquoise waters lap the palm-shaded beaches and there’s a smile on the face of every visitor as they spot their very first Fitzroy Island turtle taking a breath for air right next to the jetty.

Since I was staying on the island, I headed straight up the ramp directly in front of the jetty to check into the resort.

Fitzroy Island Resort – Staying in the Island Suite

If you’re thinking about booking a room at the Fitzroy Island Resort, then I can highly recommend staying in the Island Suite. This room is amazing, with facilities including a kitchenette, lounge, TV, large bathroom and of course, a super-comfortable Queen bed.The best part though, is that the suite has beach views, meaning you can lap up the tropical vibes from your own balcony!

The room is excellent and I can find very little to fault.

Resort Facilities

The reason why I recommend staying at least two nights at the resort is that there’s just so many fun things to do on Fitzroy Island. Coupled with the fact that the resort has an awesome pool with a swim-up bar, you’ll definitely have a hard time juggling your priorities between adventure and relaxation time.

Below are some more resort facilities you can expect to find at the resort:

  • Zephyr’s Restaurant – fancier restaurant attached to the resort which is great for breakfast and dinner.
  • Foxy’s Restaurant – a second restaurant/bar a few hundred metres from the resort serving beers, cocktails and great food all day.
  • FISH – FISH is Fitzroy’s very own dive and gear rental shop. You can book activities like kayaking, glass-bottom boat trips, scuba diving, and guided snorkelling from here.
  • Kids Play Area – fun room for the little ones to plan out of the sun
  • General store – a small little kiosk-style shop selling snacks and general items on the way to Foxy’s restaurant.
  • Turtle rehabilitation centre – Turtle conservation initiative helping to rehabilitate injured and sick Green and Hawksbill Turtles

Honest Review of Fitzroy Island Resort

Okay, by now you can probably already tell that I’m a big fan of Fitzroy and the resort. In my opinion, visiting Fitzroy should be on everybody’s list of things to do in Cairns, and with so many activities and opportunities for adventure, you’ll need more than a day.

While the resort is the only one on the island, the thing is that you probably wouldn’t want to pick another resort anyway. I was really impressed with everything from the cleanliness to the facilities on offer– and let me tell you, that beach view from the Island Suite is unreal! Even as a pick for a place to stay in Cairns, Fitzroy Island Resort offers competitive prices even compared to the mainland. And of course, this resort cannot be matched in terms of location!

As a keen conservationist, I also have lots of praise for the resort for and accommodating the Reef Restoration Foundation, designed to replant corals on the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the Turtle Rehabilitation Program.

In charge of leaving an honest blogger’s review of what it’s like to stay on Fitzroy Island, I’m happy to give this resort a 5/5 for my awesome stay! To top it off, I was blessed with excellent weather and had a great time joining in on many of the activities they run including scuba diving and a glass-bottom boat trip.

Safe to say that I’ll be back!
