Five Reasons Why Fitzroy Island Is Worth Visiting

When visiting Cairns, a trip out to the reef is at the top of most travellers’ to do list. The problem is there are so many trips and tour operators to choose from it can easily become very confusing trying to decide which one is the right one for you.

Exploring The Great Barrier Reef

Fitzroy Island is the ideal location from which to explore the Great Barrier Reef. There is a PADI accredited Sports Hub located in the resort which offers a variety of diving opportunities.

No matter your skill level there are a variety of diving courses available, so whether you’re a beginner and looking to learn or you’re a certified diver, there are options for you. You can learn more about the scuba options available here

For those who would prefer to snorkel their way around the reef you will find the most amazing coral and tropical sea life just metres from the shore and all snorkel and dive equipment can be hired from Dive Centre.

If you’re after a bit more adventure, sea kayaks are available for hire allowing you to explore the reef at your own pace or you can choose to go on a guided sea kayak tour where you will be taken to the most pristine, remote beaches and snorkeling locations that can’t be reached by foot or boat.

If you’re not too keen on getting wet or have small children who want to catch a glimpse of a real life Nemo, then a Glass Bottom Boat Tour is a fun way to see the reef and learn all about this amazing underwater paradise.

The Great Barrier Reef

Hiking/Walking

As we mentioned earlier, a visit to Fitzroy Island isn’t just about the reef. 97% of the Island is National Park, covered in tropical rainforest just waiting to be explored with a number a hiking trails catering to a range of ages and fitness levels.

  • Secret Garden Track – This is a simple 1km track that winds its way through the Island’s lush jungle. The return trip take 45 minutes allowing you some time to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature and wildlife.
  • Nudey Beach Track – A nice leisurely walk, the Nudey Beach Track is a 45 minute return trip winding through tropical rainforest and past granite boulders before opening out onto the stunning blue waters of Nudey Beach.
  • Boulder Lookout – Walking east from the Fitzroy Island jetty you’ll come to the beginning of boulder trail. This short walk has some steep steps you’ll need to navigate before reaching the vast panoramic views that stretch from Cairns to Cape Grafton. This is also the beginning of the Summit Track and is a 30 minute return trip.
  • Summit Track – This walk is recommended for people with a high level of fitness as it passes over very steep terrain. Summit Track takes in tropical rainforest and coastal woodlands before opening out to stunning views of the island and surrounding ocean. It is a 3hr return trip and starts by heading up the Boulder Trail from behind the jetty.
  • Lighthouse Road Track – Trekking along the steep concrete road coming from the north-eastern point of Welcome Bay, the Lighthouse Road Walk passes many great viewing platforms as you make your way to the historic lighthouse. When the ranger is on duty you can enjoy 360 degree views of the Island and the surrounding Coral Sea. This is a 2hr return trip and is a very worthwhile walk for those who are happy to work up a good sweat.

Turtle Rehabilitation Centre

Fitzroy Island is also proud to be home to Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC), which is a volunteer operated, non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles.

If you want to learn more about these majestic animals, the centre runs daily tours where you can see the turtles and learn all about the great work these dedicated carers are doing to help bring these turtles back to full health before their release back into the ocean. Giant Ocean Trampoline

If you have any energy left after all this adventure then head over to the giant ocean trampoline for a whole lot of fun for both kids and adults.

It is located just off shore and will keep the kids entertained for hours, giving mum and dad the perfect opportunity to have some rest and relaxation time on the beach.
