Fitzroy Island, near Cairns

Located just a short 45-minute fast cat ride away from the Cairns Marina lays the exquisitely beautiful Fitzroy Island. An idyllic tropical paradise comprised by 97% rainforest National Park and with snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef available straight off the beach, Fitzroy Island is one of the most remarkable locations in Australia for setting up a tent and soaking up the laidback island vibes.

With an array of accommodation types on offer, Fitzroy Island is suitable for travellers of all budgets. Whether you love camping for its value for money or you are mad on nature (or both!), Fitzroy Island has approximately 20 tent sites located right by the beach. Available nearby to your tent space is a stylish and modern amenities block, as well as a covered pergola eating area and beachfront BBQs.

Campers on Fitzroy Island are required to supply their own equipment, keeping in mind each tent is limited in size to 3m x 3m and each site a maximum of 2 adults plus 2 children. Fitzroy Island is an adventure seeker’s haven, with amazing snorkelling and diving opportunities available alongside an array of fun activities including sea kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, bouncing on the giant ocean trampoline, taking a glass bottom boat tour, walking and/or hiking one or more of the island’s magical walking trails and paying a visit to the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.

Imagine waking up, grabbing your mask and snorkel and exploring the Great Barrier Reef straight off the island’s shore (with the chance to see majestic sea turtles, an array of tropical fish and beautiful coral)… It doesn’t get much better than that!
